Black Onyx exposed aggregate
Black and dark grey pebble in charcoal cement. The most requested finish in the new estates.

Services built for Melton

Vehicle Crossover Construction
The concrete section between the kerb and your property boundary, built to Melton City Council's standard drawings. We prepare the Works Within Road Reserve application, hold the required $10 million public liability cover, and book the inspection so the crossing passes first time.

Concrete Driveways
Plain, coloured or reinforced driveways poured on properly compacted base. Melton sits on reactive basalt-plain clay, so we size the mesh and the control joints for soil movement rather than pouring a flat slab and hoping.

Asphalt Driveways
Hot mix asphalt driveways laid over a compacted crushed rock base, with a concrete crossover to council standard at the street. Cheaper than concrete on long runs, quicker to use, and forgiving on Melton's reactive clay when the base underneath is built properly.

Gravel Driveways
Crushed rock and toppings driveways for rural blocks, acreage and long runs where concrete or asphalt does not stack up. Built in layers on a shaped, compacted subgrade with a crown and proper drainage, so it stays a driveway instead of turning into a track.

Driveway Resurfacing
A new hot mix asphalt surface over a tired asphalt or sound concrete driveway, with cracks, potholes and edges repaired first. A fraction of the cost of replacement when the base underneath is still doing its job, and we tell you plainly when it is not.

Crossover Widening & Replacement
Widening a single crossing to a double, or replacing one that has cracked, sunk or been chewed out by truck traffic. Widening is still permit work even when the driveway behind it is untouched — we handle that application too.
Learn more
Exposed Aggregate & Decorative Finishes
Exposed aggregate, honed and coloured finishes for the driveway itself. Decorative work inside the road reserve needs council sign-off, so we tell you upfront which finish stops at the boundary and which one can run the full length.

Second Crossover for Caravan & Boat Access
A second crossing for the van, boat or trailer, including the side-gate slab behind it. Council assesses these on frontage width, setback and street tree position — we check feasibility before you pay for anything.

Permit & Road Reserve Paperwork
Application forms, insurance certificates, traffic management where the speed limit demands it, and the pre-pour and final inspections. You can engage us for the paperwork alone if you already have a concreter lined up.
Learn moreFirst call to parking on it: three to five weeks
The crossing sits on council land, so it needs a permit, an insured contractor and an inspection. We run all of it as one job.
- 01
Site measure & quote
We walk the block, check fall, access and the old slab, and give you one written number for permit, base and pour.
- 02
Council permit
We lodge the vehicle crossing application with Melton City Council. Allow around ten business days for a straightforward crossing.
- 03
Excavate, form, pour
Usually two to three days on site: excavation and compacted base one day, formwork and the pour the next.
- 04
Cure & drive on
About seven days before you park on it, 28 days to full strength. Then it just quietly does its job.

Your local Melton crew
Melton Driveways & Crossovers works across the whole City of Melton — Melton, Melton South, Melton West, Kurunjang, Brookfield, Harkness and Weir Views through to the newer estates at Cobblebank, Strathtulloh, Aintree, Deanside, Fraser Rise, Thornhill Park, Rockbank and Diggers Rest. We built the business around the part of the job most homeowners hit first and understand least: the crossing sits on council land, not yours, so it needs a permit, an insured contractor and an inspection before it is signed off. That means we quote the permit, the excavation, the base and the pour as one number instead of leaving you to chase an application while a concreter waits on site. Every job is scoped against the council's current standard drawings and the reactive clay this part of Melbourne's west is built on.
Questions, answered
Permits, prices, timing and the things volume builders leave out of the contract.
Read the guides →Do I need a council permit for a driveway crossover in Melton?
Yes. Melton City Council issues a Permit to Create or Interfere with a Vehicle Crossing, and it applies whether you are building a new crossing, widening an existing one or removing one. The crossing sits in the road reserve, which is council-controlled land, so the work cannot be approved retrospectively the way some private-property work can. The permit is separate from any planning or building permit your new home needed. We lodge the application as part of the job — confirm the current requirements with Melton City Council, as local laws and fee schedules are reviewed periodically.
What does a crossover permit cost in Melton?
Council charges a set application fee that depends on whether the works are classed as minor or non-minor and on the speed limit of the street. In the 2025-26 schedule listed on the national ABLIS register, minor works on a road below 50 km/h were $153.94 and non-minor works $388.99. Councils review fees each July, so treat those as an indication and check the current schedule with Melton City Council. The contractor also has to carry at least $10 million in public liability insurance to work in the road reserve.
How much does a concrete driveway cost in Melton?
Most residential driveways in the area land somewhere between $80 and $150 per square metre for plain reinforced concrete, and higher for exposed aggregate or coloured finishes. A typical single driveway plus a compliant crossing usually runs into several thousand dollars once excavation, base, mesh, the pour and the permit are counted. The variables that move the number most are how much fall there is across the block, whether the old slab has to come out and be carted away, and how far the pour is from where the truck can stand.
Do you only do concrete, or asphalt and gravel driveways too?
All three. Concrete is still the most common choice in the estates and the only material council accepts for the crossover itself, but behind your boundary the driveway is your call. We lay hot mix asphalt driveways and resurfacing, and build layered crushed rock and toppings driveways for rural and acreage blocks. Each has its own page explaining where it makes sense, what it costs and how it behaves on Melton's clay, and we will tell you honestly which one suits your block rather than the one we happen to be laying that week.
How long does the whole process take?
Allow around ten business days for council to assess a straightforward crossing application, though this varies with volume and with how complete the submission is. Construction itself is usually two to three days on site — excavation and base one day, formwork and pour the next — and then the concrete needs about seven days before you drive on it, and around 28 days to reach full strength. The honest timeline from first call to parking on it is generally three to five weeks.
My builder finished the house but there's no driveway. Is that normal?
It is extremely common in the Melton growth estates. Volume builders frequently exclude the driveway and the crossing from the base contract, or include only the crossing and leave the driveway to you. Some estates also have a developer design guideline that specifies finishes or setbacks, which sits on top of the council permit. Check your build contract and your estate's design guidelines before you get quotes, and send us both — it changes what we can propose.
