Concrete Driveways & Crossovers in Kurunjang
Kurunjang is one of Melton's established residential pockets rather than a greenfield estate, and that changes the work almost completely. Most driveways here were poured between the late 1980s and the early 2000s, which means they are reaching the end of a normal concrete service life at exactly the moment households have added a second or third car. The two jobs we are called out for most in Kurunjang are replacing a cracked, lifting or badly stained original driveway, and widening a single crossing that was fine for one car and is not fine for two. Both are permit work, because both touch the section of concrete between the kerb and your front boundary. We quote the permit, the demolition and cartage of the old slab, the base preparation and the new pour as a single figure, so you are not managing a council application and a concreter separately.
What the older Kurunjang housing stock means for your quote
A driveway replacement in an established street is a different job from a first pour on a bare block. There is an existing slab to break out and cart away, which is real cost and real truck movements. There are established street trees, and council will not approve a crossing that compromises one. There are service pits, water meters and Telstra pits that were placed decades ago and sometimes sit awkwardly close to where you want the crossing to go. And there is usually a garden bed, irrigation or a retaining edge that has been built up against the old slab and has to come out with it.
None of that makes the job difficult, but it does mean a quote given over the phone from a square-metre rate is a guess. We measure on site.
Widening a single crossing to a double
This is the single most common Kurunjang enquiry. The original crossing is around three metres wide, the household now has two cars, and one of them lives on the nature strip or half on the kerb. Widening the crossing is permit work in its own right even if the driveway behind it is staying — you are altering a structure in the road reserve.
What council assesses is whether the widened crossing still leaves adequate kerb space, whether it clears the street tree and any service pits, and whether the splay and the layback match the current standard drawing. Older crossings often do not — a crossing built in 1994 was built to 1994's specification — so a widening job frequently becomes a full replacement of the crossing to bring it up to the current standard. That is worth knowing before you budget.
Reactive clay and why the old slab failed
Kurunjang, like most of Melton, sits on the Victorian Volcanic Plain. The soils are heavy reactive clays that swell when wet and shrink when dry. Over a Melton summer that movement is substantial, and a driveway poured thin, poorly reinforced or without properly spaced control joints will crack — not because the concrete was bad, but because the ground under it moved and the slab had nowhere to give.
Replacing a failed driveway with the same detail gets the same result in another fifteen years. We specify base depth, mesh and joint spacing for the soil rather than pouring to a default, and we cut the control joints early rather than leaving them to crack where they choose.
Getting started
Send us the address and a photo of the existing driveway and crossing from the street. That is usually enough to tell you whether you are looking at a widening, a crossing replacement or a full driveway job, and to give you a realistic range before anyone visits.
Common Questions
Can I just widen the driveway and leave the crossing alone?
You can, but it rarely solves the problem. If the crossing at the kerb is still three metres wide, a wider driveway behind it still funnels both cars through a single entry, and the wheels of the second car track over the kerb and nature strip. Most people who do this end up widening the crossing within a couple of years anyway.
Do I have to remove the old concrete, or can you pour over it?
Overlaying an existing driveway is possible in limited circumstances but it is usually a poor idea in Melton. A thin overlay on a slab that is already cracking will reflect those cracks through within a season or two, and it raises the driveway level, which can create a mismatch at the crossing and a drainage problem at the garage. Breaking out and repouring is the durable answer.
Is there a street tree issue in Kurunjang?
Frequently, yes. The established streets have mature council trees on the nature strip, and council will not approve a crossing that requires removing one or that cuts significant roots. Sometimes the crossing can be shifted along the frontage to clear the tree. We check this before lodging, because a rejected application costs you weeks.
How long will my street be affected?
The crossing itself is typically excavated and poured within two days, and only the kerb frontage directly outside your property is affected. We keep the footpath passable or provide a safe detour while the concrete cures, which is a condition of working in the road reserve.
