How Wide Should a Driveway Be? Sizing a Driveway and Crossover for a Melton Block
The most common regret we hear from Melton homeowners about their driveway is not the finish or the colour. It is the width. A driveway sized for one small car in 2010 does not suit a household with a dual-cab ute, a second car and a trailer, and the lawn either side of it wears the evidence. Getting the width right is cheap at the design stage and expensive afterwards, so here is how to think it through for a typical Melton, Kurunjang, Cobblebank or Rockbank block.
Start with what has to fit
A driveway has two jobs: get vehicles from the street to where they park, and let people get in and out of them without stepping into the garden. Work backwards from the vehicles.
A standard car is around 1.8 metres wide without mirrors. A large SUV or dual-cab ute is closer to 2 metres, and over 2.2 with the mirrors out. Opening a door comfortably needs another 60 to 70 centimetres beside the car. That is why a single driveway that is only 2.5 metres wide feels tight the moment anything bigger than a hatchback uses it, and why we generally suggest a minimum of 3 metres for a single driveway, and 3.5 metres if you can afford it.
For two cars side by side, add the second car and a gap between them. A double driveway of 5.5 metres is workable; 6 metres is comfortable and is what most new Melton homes with a double garage end up with, matching the garage door width.
The crossover is a separate question
The crossover is the section between the kerb and your property boundary, and it sits on council land. Melton City Council sets rules for crossover width, position and construction, and a permit is required to build, widen or replace one. Council limits the maximum width of a crossover relative to the frontage, requires clearance from street trees, power poles, pits and neighbouring crossovers, and specifies how the splays taper to the kerb. Our vehicle crossover construction service handles the permit and the council specification as part of the job.
The practical point is that a wide driveway on your side of the boundary does not entitle you to a wide crossover on council's side. If you want a double-width crossover, or a second crossover for a caravan or boat, that is a permit application with its own criteria, and it is worth confirming what council will approve before you pour concrete that assumes it.
Estates have their own rules
Much of Melton's new housing sits in estates such as Cobblebank, Thornhill Park and Atherstone, and estate design guidelines commonly restrict driveway width at the front boundary, the proportion of the frontage that can be hard surface, and sometimes the finish. A driveway that meets council rules but breaches the estate covenant can still be a problem at settlement or with the developer. Check the guidelines before you finalise a width, particularly on narrower lots where the driveway is a large share of the frontage.
Tandem driveways and long blocks
On narrow lots where cars park nose to tail, the driveway can be single width but needs to be long enough for both cars to sit fully within the property, clear of the footpath. Council and most estates require vehicles parked on a driveway to be entirely off the footpath and nature strip. A typical car needs about 5.5 metres of length to park clear; two in tandem need about 11. Add the depth of the garage setback and the driveway length adds up quickly.
Turning and manoeuvring space
Straight driveways are simple. Driveways that turn, or that lead to a garage set at an angle to the street, need enough width in the turn for the vehicle to swing without cutting the corner onto the lawn. A gentle curve needs to be wider through the bend than a straight run, and the inside edge of the curve wears first. If you have to reverse out onto a busy road, a small turning bay or a widened section near the house that lets you turn around and drive out forwards is a genuine safety improvement and is worth the extra concrete.
Caravans, boats and trailers
Caravan side access is the single biggest driver of extra driveway width in Melton, and it has its own rules. A caravan or large boat trailer needs a clear path around 3 metres wide, straight or nearly straight, with adequate height clearance under eaves, and a slab thick enough for the load. Where the caravan will sit beside the house, the side access driveway and the second crossover feeding it must both be approved. There is a fuller guide to caravan side access on this site, and our second crossover for caravan and boat access service covers what council typically approves.
Width and cost
Driveway cost scales with area, so every extra half metre of width over the full length adds up. The way to think about it is to size for the vehicles you will actually own for the next fifteen years, not the ones you have today, and to add width where doors open and corners turn rather than uniformly along the whole run. A 6 metre double driveway that tapers to a single-width crossover, where council requires it, is a common and sensible compromise.
Drainage and the extra width
A wider driveway sheds more water, and on Melton's reactive clay that water has to go somewhere deliberate. Falls, grated drains and the relationship between the driveway and the house slab all get harder to manage as the area grows. Driveway drainage and stormwater is covered separately on this site; the point here is that width decisions and drainage decisions should be made together.
The short version
Single driveway: 3 metres minimum, 3.5 metres if you can. Double: 5.5 to 6 metres, matching the garage. Tandem: single width but long enough to park clear of the footpath. Crossover width is a council decision with a permit, not a homeowner decision. Caravan access needs about 3 metres clear and its own approval. And check the estate guidelines before anything else.
